The Reddit response regarding the ongoing Boston Bomber manhunt, and Eclipse Phase.

For those of you unaware, or reading this thread some time in the future, suspects of the bombing that occurred during the Boston Marathon are currently being chased by police through Boston. The MSM response has been substandard to say the least, with information regularly being out of date by a measure of hours.

Meanwhile, Reddit has been keeping and extremely up to date record of happenings, pulling from resources such as people on the ground, constant monitoring of police radio bands (to the point of the police requesting that their officers take care) and the occasional insider scoop. It is an amazing example of crowd sourced news, and I think an extremely good example of things to come.

This is what I imagine the reaction is in Eclipse Phase after a major disturbance. Imagine what the current Reddit response would be like if we had the level of sousveillance that exists in Eclipse Phase. It is simultaneously awe inspiring and terrifying. I thought that people here may be interested in seeing first hand what that might look at. A truly crowd sourced effort to keep track of live, ongoing events.

I only use /adviceanimals on Reddit, so when I saw the thread title I thought you were posting a meme ;)

Don't forget wrongly

Don't forget wrongly identifying people as terrorists, mass reproducing their photos on the net, and ruining their lives.

EXACTLY this ^

Mea Culpa: My mode of speech can make others feel uninvited to argue or participate. This is the EXACT opposite of what I intend when I post.

Yup, there are also massive

Yup, there are also massive consequences associated with peoples ability to be more connected with their news. I understand why the MSM was so far behind everyone else, they have to verify their information. If they ruin someone’s reputation, they can be sued into the ground because of it.

But even that aspect of it is very interesting when applied to Eclipse Phase. Especially in the Outer System. Imagine the consequences of being sleeved into a morph similar to that of a terrorist, and suddenly finding your @-rep being destroyed when he sets off an IED in your habitat. It doesn't matter that 15 minutes after your name is flashed to everyone nearby you are found innocent, you are connected to the bombing, and your rep has already taken the hit. Suddenly you cannot really afford anything, no-one is willing to do you favours. You are royally fucked.

It will be interesting to see whether or not the hive mind grows a consciousness in that regard given more experience in covering massive events like this. It already started happening here, as the collators of information began to self censor themselves regarding police positions and the like.

a bigger problem I forsee...

is the same one mentioned I think in snowcrash... if travel is near instantanious, or its easy to slide on a new morph on the other side of town where the action is taking place... how many people would just show up at a riot or uprising? what about the problems some areas are having with party crews now? in Santa Barbara they closed a public beach for three days recently because of party crew texts and emails being sent to something like 10,000 people telling them to be at the beach for a mega party the cops would never be able to shut down... the same things would happen in Eclipse if durring any major event all travel was not suspended or slowed in some way.

I can't imagine that rep in EP is that fickle. The problem today is that people remember seeing your face and don't see the retraction (or don't remember it). In EP a wrongful accusation would be followed by a retraction that stuck with your profile, and the retraction would probably even have a confidence metric assigned (there's a difference between "wrongly accused" and "he got off on a technicality")

I would have thought that

I would have thought that muses would have that as a basic function - watching for and taking into account retractions. Muses are said to handle most of the rep-interactions, after all.

With 80% of the population as infomorphs I'd think the very best parties are actually in simulspace.
